Long-term settlement ofM יwlandfi lls is 11 complex process , which is explainedby
the following two mechanisms: ( I) th e mechanical long-te rm compression ofdegradable organ ic
solids (DO ) an d un-degra able organic so lids (UD S); rind 2) th e decomposition-based
compression of the DO . Based on these tw dist inct s tlerncnt mechanisms. in this study, the
auth rs propose a new estimation model to predict the long-term sett lement ora MSW landfill. An
optimization process using a real-codedgenetic algorithm (GA) is performed (0 evaluatetheparameters
of the pro ed estim tion model, based on the settlemenI data measured at the Mountain View
Land fill locatednear San Jose,California, USA. In comparisonwith the existing settlement models,
the mode l p ic ettlement veryclose to the measured data and closely conformed to the Grisolia
and Napol niיs long-term ttlement curve, Unlike theexisting models, it is the onlymodel that can
produce imation f r both long-term and short-termsettlement reliably and consistent ly.
