To determine the prevalence of helicobacter pylori (H. Pylori) infection in
perients with gosrre< omy or gaslric cancer.
Material an d M thods: Sampl es f rom 95 (69 male s, 26 Females) consecutive
potients who nod u dergon rgery for gastric cancer were included in this study.
Histologic examinati on of tumor obtai ned at the time of surgery yielded the
dlognosis and then the specimens were stained with hoematoxylin and eosin and
Giemso for the 055 S$ITl nt of tumor ond H.pylori infection. All patients did H.pylori
immunologic and urease t st.
Re ulls: From 95 patients with gast ric cancer, 83 patients (87.36%) were positive
fo r H. pylor i in ectloo . Histologic typ of tumors was intestinal in 6 1 patients and
diffuse in 7 po rlent . The prevalence of H. pylori was 93.2% in intestinal type
card nom and 28.5% in diffuse ty pe (P- value=O.0002). No significant difference
wos found ifי sex, smoking and sf fng betw een H.pylori positive gastric cancer and
H.p ylorl nego ive cases.
Co elusle n. This stud y reconfirm d a high prevalence of H. pylori infection in
p otlents suffering from gostrlc cone r and provided that evaluation for H. pylori
inf ection might confe r ad ditional benefi t in identifying the population that is at
greo t r risk for rhls tumor,
