An efficient protocol has been developed for the synthesis of various pyrano[2,3-d]pyrimidinones from condensation of
aromatic aldehydes, malononitrile and barbituric-or thiobarbituric acid in aqueous ethanol using L-proline as a neutral
bifunctional catalyst.
