Bacillussp. 5B825,a grampositive bacteriaisolated from soilwasfound tobeeffective in the biodegradation of natural rubber latex. The products of latex biodegradation were separated fromthe ether extract bythin layer chromatography. Gas chromatographyand m.ass spectrometry
showedthe biodegradationof the major compoundinto three simpler fractions with lowmolecular weights.This was further confirmedbyFouriertransform infrared spectroscopic analysis.Asingle
band in the control at 2856/cm got split into four subunits such as 2805.45, 2774.12, 2692.40 and 2602.50/cmpossiblyrepresenting C-H-stretching, the formationof carboxylicacids and hydroxyl
stretching respectively. Decreasein the total organic carbon of the medium, accumulationof lipids in thebacterialcelland formation ofacidsin the extractwerealsoobserved during thebiodegradation ofthe natural rubber latex.
