Summarization is an important skill for college students since it enables them to reflect their understanding of what they have read. Thus, it is essential to teach the students summary writing strategies in English to enhance their reading and writing abilities. It is hypothesized that there is a correlation between teaching summary strategies accompanied by the rubrics as the scoring scale and the achievement of students. The aim of this research is to verify the validity of this hypothesis, and to achieve this aim an experiment is designed. A group of 30 students are randomly chosen from third year college students. They set for the pre-test and asked to make a summary for Chapter Four from Book One from The Return of the Native by Thomas Hardy. Then there were taught the summary strategies and were also presented by the rubrics that will be used in marking their summaries. The results obtained from the two tests point to the existence of a significant difference in their achievement after being taught the summary strategies and the rubrics for marking
