Arnold Bennett (1867 - 1931) is concerned with the family life of the middle class . He is a social observer who writes of women with a real understanding than most of his contemporaries , and his female characters are memorable . He might be called a sociological reality . Bennett s popular novel Clayhanger (1910) reveals about the early twentieth - century , largely middle - class reading public s expectations of New Women , particularly as these expectations concerned domesticity , employment and feminine idealism . His portrayal of heroines seems uniquely different from other portrayals of the New Woman in the Edwardian period , in that this ordinary new woman took advantage of opportunities presented to her in the public sphere , not out of financial need , but rather because of a more spiritual need to experience a sense of usefulness and self worth. This research aims to discuss the presentation of women in Bennett s novel Clayhanger and the social and economic forces which shape their lives .
