This study examined the main factors of the official Jordanian
theatre’s decline, starting from the late 1970’s till the present, through the
examination of a number of play productions that were presented by the
official Jordanian theatre and directed by the active Jordanian directors,
over the period involved. The study delineated and discussed seven
detrimental factors, which contributed to this decline. These factors are:
(1) abandoning Realism and Naturalism theatrical styles by wrongly
adopting anti-Realism theatrical styles, and doing away with some of the
logic of aesthetics, (2) eliminating the whole Jordanian theatrical
movement to a 2-week theatre festival yearly, (3) the uncomplimentary
choice of plays and ignoring the world’s classics, (4) the quality of
education at the Yarmook University’s Drama Department, (5) politicians
in charge of the Jordanian theatre, not theatre artists, (6) the lack of
unbiased scientific theatre criticism, and (7) the lack of educational
theatres in Jordan’s universities. The study concluded that working to fix
and enhance each one of these factors ought to take the Jordanian theatre
to higher grounds.
