Decrease of energy intake and increase of energy uptake that can be leaded to negative
energy balance, are two principles of obesity prevention, control and treatment programs. Leptin hormone, as
a regulator of energy intake level and exercise training, as an increaser factor for energy expenditure level;
play an important role to prevention, control and treatment of obesity. Understanding of correlation,
interaction and effect of these factors together and on obesity process, can be new view in prevention and
control of obesity.
Methodology: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to determine and compare of correlation between
Physical Activity Rating and concentration of serum Leptin and Lipoproteins in randomly selected of over
weight females (20-50 yrs). This analytical study was performed in 72 subjects who were voluntarily
participated, was based on National Health Interview Survey and Physical Activity Rating questionnaire;
[Age: 33.00 ± 9.90 yrs, BMI: 24.49 ± 3.01 kg/m2, %fat: 29.07 ± 5.58]. Estimated VO2max (30.27 ± 7.03
ml.kg-1.min-1) as an physical activity rating index estimated was based on non-exercise prediction equations
for VO2max was developed by researchers at the university of Houston; using Age, Gender, Physical
Activity status and Body Fat percent. Fasting serum concentration of Leptin (33.93 ± 13.50 ng/ml); TC
(175.12 ± 33.61 mg/dl); LDL–c (110.30 ± 26.40 mg/dl); HDL–c (46.07 ± 12.15 mg/dl) were measured.
Serum Leptin was measured by ELISA method; and Serum TC, LDL-c and HDL-c was measured by
enzymatic method; with ROSHE full automated auto analyzer, using pars azmoon kits. The Normality of
variable distribution tested with, kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Significantly of Pearson and Spearman
correlation coefficient and compare of this coefficient tested with T-Fisher and Z-Fisher tests, respectively
(p≤0.05).
Results: Correlation coefficient between estimated VO2max and Leptin (r = -0.511** , P ≤ 0.001), LDL-c (r
= -0.432** , P ≤ 0.001), HDL-c (r = 0.256* , P = 0.030), TC (r = -0.262* , P = 0.026), BMI (r = -0.617** , P
≤ 0.001) and Fat percent (r = -0.847** , P ≤ 0.001) were significant.
Discussion and Conclusion: Results demonstrated that a reverse and significant association between
estimated VO2max with serum concentration of Leptin and Lipoproteins that might be due to effects and
strongly reverse relation between physical activity rating with females body fat percent.
