Corrosion of reinforcing steel in concrete is the main cause of deterioration of reinforced concrete structures, and it has been investigated overt the last three decades. Carbonation and presence of chloride ions are two major factors, which cause corrosion of reinforcement in concrete to proceed to an unacceptable degree. Besides these there are few more factors, some related to the concrete quality, such as w/c ratio, cement content, impurities in the concrete ingredients, etc., which affect reinforcement corrosion. Several solutions have been proposed to solve this problem, though to date no ideal solution has been found. Some of these methods involve cathodic protection, surface treatment of rebars, etc.. In this paper a review is provided on reinforcement corrosion, effect of aggressive ions on reinforcement corrosion, and methods of reinforcement corrosion control.
