As the Iranian academic staff are in increasingly in need to write their paper in English to
be published in the prestigious international journals, one of the strategies to overcome the
difficulties aroused in writing academic paper is obtaining some knowledge about text genre.
This study aimed at examining the possible impact of the instruction of genre –based writing
instruction and extensive academic reading on the academic staff ‘writing performance. To do
this end, a course was provided to two homogenous groups of academic staff as an experimental
and a control group; exploiting explicit instruction of the genre based pedagogy about academic
text and extensive academic reading to the experimental group. Having run ten sessions of
instruction, the performances of the two groups were compared with each other through
administering a post test. The findings were indicative of the effective role of genre knowledge
texts on academic staffs’ writing performance.
