As well as many other problems of urban areas today, traffic congestion is a severe problem in
many modern cities around the world. Tehran, as one of the large and most crowded cities in world, is therefore
not free from these problems. Thus just like other transportation departments of the world, Tehran
Transportation Department, has implemented plans and systems for reducing traffic volume. One of the plans
that has been implemented in many major cities of the world is gathering and propagating traffic information.
In this paper, we have studied this plan and have identified its related problems in 3 sections including
capturing data, processing data and propagating data. We have then tried to explain the available approaches
to make it intelligent and automatic through different models and solutions. In the end, we will mention the
advantages of making Tehran traffic intelligent,followed by explaining available applications in this
field. This paper can be used as a reference for researchers and Tehran Traffic Department staff.
