The contacting of a gas with a liquid (fluid-fluid system) for the purpose of mass
transfer of one or more components is very important operation in chemical engineering
and industrial plants; often the mass transfer is followed by a chemical reaction. One or
both of the phases are normally subdivided in such a contacting operation. The purpose
of this phase subdivision is generally twofold. It increases the interfacial area and it
produces relative motion between the phases. Both these effects contribute to an
increase in overall mass transfer rate. Because of the great importance of this contacting
operation this paper has been done to see which phase should be dispersed to achieve
the best performance. The present paper is concerned with the different methods that
are used in absorption process to enhance mass transfer between a gas phase and liquid
phase. The removal of one or more selected components from a mixture of gases by
absorption into a suitable liquid is the second major operation of chemical engineering
that is based on interface mass transfer controlled largely by rates of diffusion.
