Effective control of ships in a designed trajectory is
always an important task for ship maneuvering. Because
of the model parameters uncertainty and external
disturbances such as waves, winds and ocean currents,
in this paper the robust H∞ controller is designed for a
container ship. The aim of this paper is to apply the well
known methodology of reliability analysis in order to
evaluate the reliability of designed H∞ controller for the
container ship to achieve the predefined heading angle
overshoot (less than 20%) in way-point tracking. For
this purpose three random variables characterizing wind
speed, wind direction and wave direction are considered
as the inputs because these affect overshoot more than
the other variables. The results show the ability of the
designed controller to compensate the effects of timevarying
disturbances in way point tracking control.
