A new design of all optical 1of 2 demultiplexer (D-mux) based on silicon rods in the air, created by two dimensional square lattice photonic crystals (PCs), is proposed and illustrated. The device has five different ports including; a selection line “S”, an input data port “A”, and three output data ports, Q0, Q1 and Q2. Photonic band gap (PBG) calculations and electric field distributions are accomplished by plane wave expansion (PWE) and finite difference time domain (FDTD) methods, respectively. As electric field distributed, power levels lower than ‘‘0.4P0’’ are considered as ‘‘0’’ logic value and higher than ‘‘0.4P0’’ as ‘‘1’’ logic value. When S = 0, the data of port A, is directed to Q0 and when S = 1, is directed to Q1; thus the structure functioning as a D-mux. The device is applicable for all optical processors and integrated circuit. It can also be used in integrated wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical systems.
