Characterization within stylistics and translation can benefit from corpus-studies through what might be called ‘keyness’ (Culpeper, 2002). Keywords are style markers, when style is viewed as “….frequencies of linguistic items in a given context, and contextual probabilities (Enkvist, 1973). It has been shown that (e.g. Culpeper, 2002) it is the cumulative effect of lexical items on the one hand, and grammatical features, on the other, that is decisive in shaping an impression of character, which is assumed to be conveyed through translation. However, when dealing with translation products, samples rather than the whole text are analyzed, which has its own shortcomings (Williams, 2001). The issue of sampling, though, has been obviated via corpus-based approaches. Considering the issue of reflecting the style of the characters, the current study aimed to examine the speech of two major characters in Shakespeare`s Hamlet via the study of keyness in the ST and TT. To examine the extent to which positive keyness might be reflected relatively untouched in the TT, those keyword which were well-dispersed in the dialogue of the character were initially identified employing Antconc software. After the analysis, it was found that, contrary to the researchers’ expectation, the characters’ style might be reflected not only through the lexical items but also via grammatical words. It was also found that the deviation from the source text keyness can be accounted for by the difference in the metaphorical construction of English and Persian.
