Ultrasound imaging is often more desirable than another medical imaging formations because it is non-invasive, low-cost, portable and utilizable. Ultrasound imaging technique uses high-frequency sound waves to image internal body structures. In time, the main disadvantage of ultrasound imaging is the poor quality of images, which are mainly originated by multiplicative speckle noise. Speckle occurs especially in images of the liver and kidney whose underlying structures are too small to be resolved by large wavelength ultrasound. Speckle noise affects image edges and fine details which limit its resolution and make diagnostic more difficult. This paper gives an overview of speckle noise reduction in ultrasound imaging using wavelet transform.
