Phenomenology is a philosophical approach to the study of consciousness and subjective experience. In recent years it has become a more prominent element of the social scientific study of sport and physical education (Stolz, 2014; Standal, 2015). Phenomenology is, in particular, significant for physical education because it highlights what it is like to be embodied and recognizes the role corporeal movement plays in learning. In my paper I am going to outline a phenomenological approach to physical education and highlight the educational implications of movement in school settings in terms of education ‘about’ movement, education ‘through’ movement and education ‘in’ movement. I will argue that physical education should not be thought of as separate or subordinate to intellectual education but as an integral part of any curriculum to do with general education.
