The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between perfectionism, stress and burnout in male and female handball coaches. 95 male and 60 female handball coaches from Isfahan province participated in the study. They completed the Perfectionism Inventory (Hill et al.,2004), the Maslach Burnout Inventory (of Maslach and Jackson (1996), and the Perceived Stress Scale (Cohen, Kamarck, Mermelstein, 1983). The results showed a significant relationship between perfectionism and stress in handball coaches (r=-0.358, P=0.001). No significant relationship was found between perfectionism and burnout in handball coaches (r=-0.122, P 0.05). Also, there was a significant relationship between stress and burnout in handball coaches (r=0.404, P=0.001). Multiple regression analysis indicated that stress and burnout were stronger predictors of perfectionism in handball coaches. The results showed that coaches who have higher stress have higher perfectionism. This result indicates that perfectionism can result in negative consequences, such as abnormal emotional responses and deficit in motivation and burnout in handball coaches.
