نشانه، عنصري طبيعي يا ساخته دست بشر است كه به لحاظ فرم و عملكرد از محيط اطراف خود متمايز است و جهت توليد و افزايش حس مكان و هدايت‌گري براي مخاطبينش است. تأكيد كردن بر روي اين عناصر و تقويت كردن آن‌ها به عنوان نمود كالبدي ارزش‌هاي معنايي و فرهنگي جامعه موجب ارتقاي تصوير ذهني شهروندان و خوانايي فضاهاي شهري و معماري مي‌شود.گام اول براي تقويت نشانه‌هاي موجود، بازشناسي آن‌ها در ميان ساير عناصر معماري و شهري است. لذا، هدف پژوهش حاضر، دستيابي به معيارهاي كالبدي موثر در نشانه شدن يك عنصر در فضاهاي معماري و شهري است. يافته‌هاي به دست آمده از مباني نظري و پرسش نامه‌اي كه توسط محققين و افراد عادي پاسخ داده شده است. نشان داد كه معيارهاي مذكور در دو دسته اصلي «تمايز نسبت به بافت اطراف» و «دلالت مشترك ميان مردم جامعه» قرار مي‌گيرند.
