دير زماني از روند تغييرات شتابان و حجيم شهرنشيني دركشور و به تبع آن سازمان فضايي خانه هاي معاصر جهت پاسخگويي و هماهنگي با اين تغييرات نمي گذرد.تغييراتي كه باعث دگرگوني الگوهاي فضايي وبه دنبال آن تغيير نقش ريز فضاهايي شد كه قرن ها پاسخگوي نيازهاي فرهنگي اجتماعي اقوام ايراني بودند.در اين ميان حياط يكي از چندين نمونه اي بود كه دستخوش تحول يا به تعبيري نابودي گرديد.حياط كه در خانه هاي ايراني جوهره ي حيات مي بود و امكان ارتباط آزاد را با طبيعت ميسر مي ساخت هم اكنون به معبر عبوري حد فاصل ساختمان و حصار بيروني تبديل شده است. مقاله حاضر در پي ارزش هاي از يادرفته در ساحت سكونت معاصر با بهره گيري از روش توصيفي تحليلي،به برسي نقش حياط خانه هاي تاريخي دوره قاجار(به علت حفظ بسياري از آثار معماري،و امكان شناخت و فهم فرهنگ و زندگي آن دوره) بر حيات ساكنين آن خانه ها مي پردازد. در اين راستا،ابتدا به دو مفهوم حياط و حيات به طور مستقل اشاره داشته و سپس با شناسايي عوامل سازنده حياط هاي تاريخي به نقش آنها بر زندگي افراد خانه اقدام نموده است.نگارنده اين مهم را در دو حوزه ،قلمرو ماده و قلمرو معني ،مورد كنكاش قرار مي دهد؛ تا از اين طريق نقش كاركردي و ساختاري حياط نسبت به كل خانه ،كنش متقابل ساكنين با حياط در چارچوب شيوه ي زندگي و رابطه متقابل آن با سازمان فضايي،تفسير ساكنان از طبيعت و اقليم و رابطه آن با زندگي برسي گردد.
