انسان همواره از نقوش و تصاوير براي بيان مقصود و يا برداشت خود از عالم استفاده كرده است. در اين ميان هر فرهنگ و تمدن به علل گوناگون نقوشي خاص و منحصر به فرد را براي بيان مقاصد خود به كار برده اند. اين تصاوير عاملي مهم در شناخت روحيات، دين، فرهنگ، عادات و دلبستگي اقوام مختلف در طول تاريخ بوده است.در معماري ايراني بخش اعظمي از فرهنگ تصويري و هنري ايران (از ديرباز تا كنون) مربوط به مجموعه آثار تجسمي است كه در وابستگي و تعامل با معماري و محيط شكل گرفته است.هنر ايراني متاثر از مباني فكري ايراني، هنري مفهومي است . اشتراك در مباني فكري و تلاش براي حفظ و انتقال اصول و معيارهاي هويت ايراني به زبان و بيان هر دوره موجب پيوستگي هويتي در آثار دوران گذشته شده است. لذا پژوهش حاضر در پي آن است كه مفاهيم نقش، متيف و الگو را با مفاهيم مرتبط با آن ها ، كه گاه داراي مشابهت و همپوشاني نيز مورد مطالعه قرار داده و نقش متمايز آن ها را نسبت به ديگر مفاهيم مطروحه در حوزه معماري مشخص سازند.
