اين تحقيق به معرفي و شرح شاخصي براي افزايش دقت نتايج تحليل خطي در سدهاي بتني قوسي مي‌پردازد. در طراحي اوليه سدهاي بتني قوسي به دليل زمان‌بر بودن تحليل غيرخطي و تعداد زياد تحليل در حين طراحي از تحليل خطي استفاده مي‌شود ؛ ولي در عمل مي دانيم با بازشدن درزهاي سدهاي بتني قوسي حتي تحت بارهاي استاتيكي تنش‌هاي كششي در محل درزها آزاد و بازتوزيع صورت خواهد پذيرفت . طراحان با علم به اين موضوع و با فرض به اينكه تنش به حد مجاز نخواهد رسيد به سد اين اجازه را مي دهند كه مقدار تنش در بدنه آن از مقدار مجاز تجاوز نمايد. حال سؤال اينجاست تا چه مقدار تجاوز از تنش مجاز قابل قبول است. اين تحقيق براي يافتن پاسخي براي اين پرسش، به معرفي شاخص بدون بعدي تحت عنوان شاخص طراحي در طراحي اوليه‌ي سدهاي بتني دوقوسي پرداخته است.در ادامه با مدلسازي و تحليل خطي و غيرخطي چندين سد بر روي دره‌هايي با اشكال مختلف ، ضمن محاسبه مقدار مناسب براي اين شاخص و رابطه ي آن با حداكثر تنش غيرخطي ، به نحوه ي استفاده از اين شاخص در طراحي هاي مقدماتي ( بدون نياز به انجام تحليل غيرخطي ولي در نظر گرفتن اثرآن ) پرداخته شده است .
