An investigation on quality of the sidewalks in Larnaca street of Famagusta, North Cyprus

In most past decades with the rise of mobility, urban planners as a primary purpose stressed on safe traffic for vehicles in streets and the proper design of sidewalks was greatly ignored. Even by increasing the number of vehicles in cities, still the civic life hear¬t is beating on the street pavements. From the urbanism standpoint, the pedestrian path is not only a place for walking and a passage to the destination, but it is a place for gathering of the people and social activities as well. Moreover, it is an area which is basically constructed with the idea of convenience and safety for pedestrian. To achieve these goals, continuity in the sidewalks and Physical factors including the width and appropriate material for pavements always should be considered. Also the elements such as ramps for disable people, landscape design, proper use of street furniture and creation of outdoor cafe is required. This study tries to probe particularities of proper walkways and to present solutions for improvement of sidewalks design. Analysis and quality evaluation of sidewalks for pedestrian in Larnaca Street is main objective of this research. The methods for data collection are on the basis of literature survey, direct observation, photographs taken from the concerned case and a questionnaire which is linked to the situation of sidewalks in Larnaca Street of Famagusta, North Cyprus.
