Alcohol and phenol moieties represent one of the most ubiquitous functional groups in nature. The formation of siliyl ether from a hydroxyl function can be utilized either to provide a volatile derivative for GC and GC-MS, or as a means of protection in synthesis. The popularity and extensive use of silyl ethers as protecting groups for alcohols come from their ease of formation, resistance to oxidation, good stability toward most non-acidic reagents, and easy deprotection to provide free alcohols [1,2]. Recently, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been emerged as new alternative renewable reaction media or catalyst for the development of environmentally benign organic transformations [3,4]. The properties of DESs are similar to that of conventional ionic liquids in terms of low vapour pressure and flammability. They often show low volatility, water-compatibility, non-toxicity, biocompatibility, bio-degradability and recyclability [5].
In conclusion we have described a simple and efficient method for the synthesis of silylethers using deep eutectic solvent as a dual catalyst and environmentally benign reaction medium.
