The use of magnetically recoverable catalysts has received considerable importance in
organic synthesis because of their ease of handling, simple workup and recoverability.
Among the various heterogeneous catalysts, particularly, mesoporuos supported catalysts
have advantages of high surface area and thermal stability. Metal modified mesoporous
silica and also magnetically recoverable mesoporous silica have been applied in many
organic transformations [1 ].In this work we wish to report an efficient method for the
synthesis of 2-substituted benzimidazoles from the reaction of aldehydes and ophenylenediamine
in the presence of catalytic amount of mesoporous silica containing Cu
and Ce metal oxides with magnetic core (Fe3O4@Cu-Ce-MS)[2 ]
Various types of aldehydes were reacted with o-phenylenediamine in the presence of
catalytic amount of Fe3O4@Cu-Ce-MS at reflux condition and corresponding 2-
sudstiuted benzimidazoles were produced in high yields. Recovery and reusability of
the catalysts was studied and results indicate that the catalyst can be reused many times
with moderate change in its activity. In conclusion, we introduced a Fe3O4@Cu-Ce-MS
as simple, efficient and eco-friendly catalyst for the synthesis of 2-substituted
benzimidazoles. Simple workup and reusability of catalysts are other advantages of this
method[3 ].
