Two complexes, [Zn(H2O)6][1,5-NDS], 1, and [Zn(H2O)5(DMF)][1,5-NDS], 2, (1,5-NDS: 1,5-Naphthalenedisulfonate and DMF: Dimethylformamide), have been synthesized using 1,5-NDS as the ligand and Zn(NO3)2.6H2O as the metal salt. They have been characterized and studied by means of single crystal X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and IR spectroscopy. The coordination ability of water and DMF solvent molecules as ligands in 1 and 2 according to Gutmann’s donor number, DN, definition were discussed. After calcinating the two compounds, ZnO nanoparticles were obtained and characterized by PXRD and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).
