پيش بيني نشست پي¬ها يكي از مهمترين و مشكل¬ترين مسائل پيش روي مهندسين ژئوتكنيك است. ميزان و توزيع نشست پي بستگي به عوامل مختلفي چون عرض و عمق پي، نوع خاك، سختي پي، سختي روسازه و غيره دارد. بررسي نشست خاك در برابر احداث ساز¬ه¬ها يكي از مباحث مورد مطالعه در حوزه ژئوتكنيك بوده كه در سال هاي اخير كارهاي زيادي در اين زمينه انجام گرفته است. نشست پي¬ها رابطه مستقيمي با نحوه توزيع بار در آنها دارد. ازاينرو با تغيير در نحوه پخش بار، نشست پي نيز قابل تغيير خواهد بود. از طرفي مدول الاستيسيته خاك كه بيانگر مشخصات فيزيكي خاك است، مي¬تواند در مقدار نشست پي¬ها تاثيرگذار باشد. در رابطه با نشست پي¬هاي سطحي تحقيقات كمتري انجام شده است. اما در رابطه با بررسي تاثير ابعاد پي بر نشست لرزه¬اي پي¬هاي سطحي واقع بر روي خاكهاي لايه¬اي مطالعات كمتري انجام شده است. از اينرو در اين پايان¬نامه تاثير مشخصات خاك در ميزان نشست لرزه¬اي پي¬هاي سطحي بر روي خاكهاي دانه¬اي و رسي، ميزان وابستگي آن به خصوصيات مكانيكي خاك مورد بررسي قرار گرفته است. نتايج حاصل از بررسي نشان دهنده اين موضوع است كه، ميزان نشست خاكها بر اساس مقدار مقاومت و مدول الاستيسيته خاكها است. بر اساس نتايج مشاهده مي¬شود كه، با افزايش مقدار مدول الاستيسيته و مقاومت مقدار نشست كمتر و با كاهش آنها مقدار نشست بيشتر مي¬گردد. اما در مورد نحوه توزيع تنش، مقدار جابجايي طبقات و همچنين انرژي كرنشي ذخيره شده، عكس اين موضوع صادق است.
