Photosensitive materials have attracted because of their potential applications in various fields, such as solid-state lasers, light emitting devices, biological labelling and flat panel displays. The in situ polymerization method was applied to synthesize nanocomposites consisting of hydrophobic NaYF4:Yb, Er (Tm) nanoparticles as the filler and polydymethylsiloxane (PDMS) as the host material. NaYF4:Yb, Er/PDMS and NaYF4:Yb, Tm/PDMS nanocomposites exhibit strong green and blue upconversion photoluminescence upon 974 nm laser excitation, due to the integration of luminescent NaYF4:Yb, Er and NaYF4:Yb, Tm nanoparticles, respectively. These nanocomposites can be potentially used as 3D display materials.
