Rice husk ash (RHA), a waste product of the rice industry is rich in silica. In this study, a simple sol–gel method to produce silica xerogel with lower sodium content from RHA was described. Silica aquagel was prepared by adding silicate solution to hydrochloric acid solution until the different pHs 5, 6 for comparison. Likewise Hydrochloric acid solution was added to sodium silicate solution until the pH 7, 8 or 9 was obtained. The obtained aquagel was washed with distilled water and dried to form silica xerogel. The prepared silica xerogel powders were characterized by FT-IR, TG/DTA, XRD, SEM, EDS, CHN techniques and BET method . The obtained silica could be expected to be used as fine raw materials for the production of silicon-based products. It has been observed that the surface area, the pore volume and the mesoporosity of the xerogel powder prepared at pH 7 are 587.94 m2g-1, 0.4724 cm3g-1 and 71%, respectively. The XRD spectra confirmed the amorphous nature of the silica.
