In the present paper, the flow field of a three-dimensional synthetic jet issuing into a turbulent boundary layer crossflow is studied by using the large eddy simulation (LES) approach. CFD results are compared with the experimental data and also an RNG k-ɛ URANS model to validate the numerical simulations. The RNG k-ɛ model is in better agreement with experimental measurements while the LES predicts the trend of flow velocity in the vicinity of the orifice more accurately. LES is extremely sensitive to the grid resolution and boundary conditions. Consequently, this model may cause an under or overestimation as compared with experiment in the regions of high-velocity gradients such as boundary layers.
