Introduction: Physical inactivity and obesity are the two main factors that are associated with the risk of cardiovascular disease but Regular physical activity has many positive health benefits, including reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, metabolic diseases and some cancers, as well as improving the quality of life. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of typical aerobic interval training on serum lipid and lipoprotein profiles in overweight girls. Methodology: This research was quasi-experimental. The sample was selected (n=40) from overweight girls who was volunteer for participating in this study. Then these subjects were randomly assigned to a training group (n=20) with age 22.42± 2.16 yr, body mass index 28.28±3.76 kg/m2 and control group (n=20) with age 21.94±1.39 yr, body mass index 27.71±3.65 kg/m2. training group performed aerobic interval training (5-minute interval walking with 2-minute rest intervals) for 35-75 minutes, 4 days a week at 65-85 percent of the heart rate maximal (HRMax) during the 6 weeks. Fasting blood samples, collected pre and post exercise after 48 hours, were assayed for lipid (Triglyceride; TG and Total Cholesterol; TC) and lipoprotein (High-density lipoprotein; HDL-C and Low-density lipoprotein; LDL-C). Paired and independent T- test were used to compare differences among means in pre and post exercise. Results: HDL-C concentration significantly increased, LDL-C, TC and BMI levels significantly decreased in the training group following 6 weeks of aerobic interval training; however, there was no significant difference between the groups in these variables. TG concentration no significantly increased in training group however, no significant difference was observed between the control and training groups. Discussion: based on the present findings, 6 weeks of aerobic interval training (with rest intervals between training bouts) has shown desirable changes on serum lipid and lipoprotein profile in overweight girls that could possibly be useful for prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease. The present exercise protocol was with easy implementation and low cost in terms of time and also cost effective. Thus it is suggested to the future researchers that apply this type of training protocol for moderating the other type of cardiovascular risk factors.
