Since the last decade, architecture and urban design has moved toward more flexibility and intelligence in space. Th e new technologies allow designers/architects to address new layers of aesthetics, information and interactivity into built/designed environment. In this context, lighting design driven by natural, socio-cultural and contextual entities plays an important role in merging art with technology in a meaningful way. Th is can lead to novel modes of spatial expressions and to redefine the dialogue between the architectural/urban space and the users.
At Lighting design collective, we believe innovative lighting design goes hand in hand with design research and futures study which will lead to designed future scenarios utilizing light beyond lighting. By introducing the notion of Engaging Lighting, this paper explores the shift toward new conceptions of architectural lighting design. To elaborate more on this topic, we’ll present four projects by Lighting Design Collective design office (Madrid, London, Helsinki). Th e presented projects illustrate designedly different modes and levels of dynamics between the space and the user
