This paper presents the optimal error estimate of the well–known moving least squares (MLS) collocation method for second–order elliptic PDEs. We will show that our estimate improves the results obtained by [Cheng, Rongjun and Cheng, Yumin, 2008, Error estimates for the finite point method, Applied Numerical Mathematics, 58 (6), pp. 884–898] both in terms of the used norm (here the uniform norm) and the obtained order estimates
