This paper presents a new approach to design Wide Area Damping Control Signal (WADCS) for damping inter-area oscillation on power system using C5.0-based decision tree method. For classifying between positive and negative damping ratio, a series of measurements are taken under various line outage scenarios with respect to operational conditions. The data of input features and output target classes are used as the input-output pairs for decision tree learning. The performance of the proposed method is verified on a 39-bus New England dynamic network. The simulation results are presented for various input features including generators and terminal variables. The results show the influence of proposed method to select global signals for damping inter-area oscillation.
