In this paper we studied real and ideal metal based patch antennas, in order to compare their scattering characteristics. It is shown that plasmonic nature of metals leads to a better ability of these antennas to control the phase front of the reflected light. Also the dimensions of the antenna could be much shorter than the wavelength in comparison to their microwave counterpart, which make them radiation element of choice for building blocks of a phase gradient metasurface
