This work describes the preparation and characterization of a novel CDs/NiO nanocomposite and its application for the highly sensitive electrochemical determination of nitrite. The CDs/NiO composite was prepared by a facile route hydrothermal method [1,2]. The as-prepared composite exhibits a favourable solubility and a high stability to prepare a film structure onto a GC electrode (CDs/NiO/GCE). The CDs/NiO nanocomposite was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), FT-IR photoluminescence and UV–vis spectroscopy techniques. The electrocatalytic performance of this nanohybrid structure was also evaluated by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Results revealed the CDs/NiO/GCE exhibited superior performance for electrochemical sensing of nitrite compared to other previously reported sensors, offering a low detection limit, a wide linear range, excellent reproducibility and selectivity and good recoveries in spiked sausage, lake and tap water samples. These results demonstrated that this new CDs/NiO nanocomposite could be a promising material for prepararing electrochemical nanostructured sensors of great utility in environmental analysis.
