Background: The worldwide prevalence of metabolic syndrome and obesity is increasing. Based on International Diabetes Federation (IDF) report’s prevalence of this syndrome in Iran is % 6.43 . New technologies are as a prominent tool for education of health behavior and improving self care. One of the important interventions to promote physical activity and dietary lifestyle changes is the delivery of tailored educational material to patients. Message tailoring is an effective approach for increasing the health care effectiveness.
Objectives: the aim of this study is to represent a model for personalize self-care system for metabolic syndrome based on the mobile application.
Materials/Patients and Methods: This is a review study and its data has been collected by using key words such as personalize care, self care, metabolic syndrome, mobile application, intelligent system and their combinations with health, thorough databases such as ProQuest, Web of Science, PubMed, Science direct and EMBASE.
Results: Main part of this model, including mobile application, electronic health record and guideline based decision support system. Individuals receive alerts regarding nutrition and physical activity based on their activity directly from their smart phone. After capturing, the information is passed to the expert system that generate recommendation. The information related to body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, central obesity, waist circumference, personal and family history of disease, nutritional habits and daily physical activity should be contained in electronic health record by medical examination and using a standard questionnaire such as IPAQ and FFQ. Dietary guidelines can be used for the development of rule based decision support system, rules are programmed using if then statement. Rule based decision support system consist of: knowledge based, rules and inference engine. Once tailoring variables were determined and messages written, metadata helps to describe and categorize the message. Individuals can set goals for improving physical activity and calorie burning rate weekly or monthly.
Conclusion: self-care is one of the one of the key building blocks for enhancing quality of life, by empowering patients to change lifestyle. Personalized intervention based on mobile application will provide individualized real time feedback and effective disease treatment and prevention strategies.
