Background: Smart homes are environments which offer connected devices through the internet of things (IoT) to set up remote medical services and home automation. This technology is useful in the field of healthcare especially for older adults due to the increasing average of life expectancy. Through smart homes, caregivers and physicians can easily monitor the health and activities of these people with which perilous events and accidents would be avoided.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to review and categorize the smart home technologies and their usability and usefulness for older adults and to mention pros and cons of these smart environments.
Materials and Methods: In this Article, 29 studies which were accessible through databases such as PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus, Ovid, Google Scholar and Web of Science and published in the years 2007 to 2016 were reviewed.
Results: From the healthcare’s point of view, older adults can be monitored and assisted through smart homes to improve their quality of life. In some fields, the effects of this technology are much more highlighted such as monitoring or recognizing health conditions, fall prevention, and social connectedness. These applications would be accompanied with monitoring devices like glucose monitors, calorie counters, wearable sensors, actuators, displays and also computational elements. From the technology’s aspect, it should be mentioned that the data is a critical feature of the environment which should be collected and processed properly with the help of appropriate computational and classification methods. In some articles machine learning based algorithms like SVM (Support Vector Machine) were applied to classify data obtained from the environment and then led to proper decision making.

Conclusion: From examining the findings, Smart homes may have health benefits for older adults to improve their quality of life and in the case of emergency, it can avoid life-threatening events. Nevertheless, smart homes can have several challenges such as the cost of implementation. In addition to this issue, it should be stated that elderly people’s privacy and technology acceptance should be considered. Besides, security of systems is one of the most important challenges and designers of frameworks ought to think about it in advance.
