Background: Since the world population ages, the number of older people with chronic health problems is increasing. Chronic health problems lead to change and decrease of functional ability of elder people. Developing and using of useful beneficial technology for elder people is crucial for performing daily routine tasks and promoting independence by engaging them in their activities. One of these technologies is smart homes that uses the “knowledge-based technologies for collecting and sharing resident information about his or her health and function”.
Objectives: This study aimed to survey impact of smart homes in life quality of elderly people.
Materials/Patients and Methods: This study is a review article that was conducted in 2016. The study was carried out in valid scientific websites for searching books, articles, scientific documents. Also, sources were selected based on content related to research issue.
Results: In the literature review, it was determined that smart homes have significant role in improving life quality of elderly people by providing emergency aids, helping vision and hearing disorders, fall detection and prevention, temperature and lighting control, physiological parameters monitoring, safety control of stove, reminder systems, decreasing of adverse events. Also, smart homes are used in supporting and intervening for conditions such as chronic disease, dementia, medication and confusion problems, increasing independency of elderly by monitoring them, empowering elderly by informing and engaging in their care and decreasing social isolation because of a safety sense.
Conclusion: Considering that age composition of Iranian population has changed in the middle age, officials and community s attention must be changed in direction to ready necessary contexts for the elderly population. One of these contexts is requirement of using smart homes and developing required infrastructures to take advantages of this technology. Safety of the elderly people increases using this technology at our houses. Also their health status will be monitored. Therefore it enhances independence and improve quality of life for the elderly people.
