Different chemical and physical methods have been studied to produce alumina nanopowders (solidstate, sol-gel, co-precipitation, CVD …) with the associated powder characteristics. Recently many researchers are showing interest on the preparation and application of nano-sized alumina or alumina composites considering their diverse properties [1,2]. It is generally believed that the properties of such alumina particles are largely governed by the particle size, morphology, surface and phase homogeneity and these can be controlled by selecting a proper synthetic route [3]. Alumina with desirable surface properties such as high surface area and mesoporous properties is most commonly used as a high-temperature catalyst or catalytic support and as a membrane [1-3].Al(NO3)3, 9H2O was dissolved in distilleddeionized water at 30°C under magnetic stirring. NaOHwas added keeping the molar ratio of Al3+/OH- at 1/3. Thesolution mixture was maintained at 60°C for 1 h and thenfiltered to remove any insoluble impurity. The freshly prepared alumina gel was dried at 150°Cfor 1 h in presence of air to eliminate the remaining H2O.Dried gel was, thencalcined at 1000 °C for 2 hours.
