Many studies have shown that gender influences the choice of strategies (Kato, 2005; Naeeini Maarof, 2010; Salem, 2006; Ziahosseini Salehi, 2007). This study aimed at investigating gender differences in the use of language learning strategies. .The participants of the study were 152 ( 76 male and 76 female) B.A. level students majoring in English teaching at Imam Khomeini International University, as well as Islamic Azad University in Qazvin. Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL), developed by Oxford (1990), was used as data collection instrument. An independent samples t-test procedure was employed for data analysis, the results of which indicated a significantly higher use of affective and social strategies by male participants. The findings of the study may have theoretical and pedagogical implications for language learners, teachers and syllabus designers.
