Demotivation as the negative aspect of motivation in language learning has been mostly ignored in the theories of language learning motivation (Dörnyei, 2005). The present work is an investigation of a local model for demotivation based on triangulation of the sources which can be used to elicit data on how different factors negatively affect the language learning motivation of the Iranian university students of non-English majors. The main themes were extracted in three different stages from the interview data from 76 bachelor students of 16 different universities in Tehran, Isfahan and Semnan, in Iran, as well as 5 professors and 2 policy-makers. The resulting themes from the Grounded Theory approach showed some correspondence with the L2 Motivational Self System (Dörnyei 2005, 2009) and its nine conditions for realization; hence, the themes were extrapolated against the theory while two other major categories were also recognized and labeled. The exploration and analysis of the demotives can complement the prior works in the L2 learning motivation research.
