Nanocomposite films based on Low Density Polyethylene and nanoperlite at 2, 4, 6 and 9 wt.%
were prepared via film blowing method. Nanoperlite was surface treated with Poly Methyl
hydrogen siloxane and the effect of silane treatment on vaious properties of the film was
investigated. SEM technique was used to evaluate the dispersion status of the nanoparticles in the
polymer matrix. Various tests including tensile strength and modulus, tear resistance on machine
and transverse directions and falling dart on the nanocomposite films containing treated and
untreated nanoperlite were carried out and the results compared. SEM results depicted a relatively
good dispersion of the nanoparticles (50-500 nm in size) within the matrix. Also, an increase of up
to 130%, 210% and 180% in tensile strength, tear resistance and falling dart properties of the
nanocomposite films were observed, as compared to neat films. Silane treatments improved the
properties considerably.
