Determination of J-integral and crack mouth opening displacement using the commercial FE software ABAQUS in Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) Polymeric Material

The modified Arcan fixture was employed to study the elastic and elastic-plastic behavior of ABS material in the mixed mode fracture. Finite element method was used to model the plate under pure mode I (opening), pure mode II (shearing) and all in plane mixed mode loading angles starting from 0 to 90 degrees for different crack length to width ratio. The fixture consisted of a central section with Compact Tension Specimen that had edge crack. J-integral and crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD) methods were determined by the numerical simulation using commercial FE software ABAQUS/Standard package. The results showed good agreement between the J integral and CMOD theories of ABS plates.
