توسعه پايدار حالت تعادل و توازن ميان ابعاد مختلف توسعه است هدف اساسي توسعه رشد و تعالي همه‌جانبه جوامع انساني است. توسعه روستايي فرايندي همه‌جانبه و پايداري است كه در چارچوب آن، توانايي¬هاي اجتماعي و اقتصادي روستايي به‌منظور رفع نيازهاي مادي، معنوي و كنترل مؤثر بر نيروهاي شكل‌دهنده نظام سكونتي محلي (اكولوژي، اجتماعي، اقتصادي و نهادي) رشد و تعالي مي¬يابد. باگذشت چند دهه از ظهور مفهوم پايداري، و روند تحولات جامعه روستايي ايران بيانگر چشم‌پوشي از اصول و معيارهاي توسعه پايدار است. حال آينده‌نگاري توسعه پايدار روستايي باعث مي‌شود كه ما با ديدن زمان حال بهتر بتوانيم آينده و بخصوص آينده توسعه و توسعه پايدار و چالش‌هاي پيش روي جامعه و بخصوص جامعه روستايي را در راستاي تحقق هر چه سريع‌تر رسيدن به يك جايگاه مناسب كه همان دستيابي به توسعه پايدار است بيش‌ازپيش درك كنيم و چشم اندازه مناسبي را براي رسيدن به توسعه پايدار روستايي در سطح محلي، ملي و بين¬المللي به دست آوريم.
