از عمده‌ترين آثار تغييرات قرن حاضر در ابعاد فرهنگي، اقتصادي و سياسي جوامع مختلف تغيير در ساخت خانواده به عنوان اصلي‌ترين ركن اجتماعات بشري است . دو مورد از مهم‌ترين كاركردهاي خانواده كه مراقبت از سالمندان خانواده و كودكان مي‌باشد، دستخوش تحول گرديده است.حال اين سوال پيش مي‌‌آيد كه چگونه مي‌توان به وسيله ي طراحي معماري پايدار سطح كيفيت زندگي‌ و محيط پيرامون سالمندان و كودكان در خانه‌هاي سالمندان و كودكان را ارتقا داد؟ طراحي پايدار به معناي انجام حداكثر با حداقل امكانات است. در طراحي پايدار بيشتر بر ايده پايداري محيطي‌ در ارتباط با معماري تاكيد ميشود. هدف از نگارش اين مقاله اين است كه چگونه ميتوان ساختماني را طراحي كرد كه كمترين تاثيرات ناسازگار بر محيط طبيعي را در طول عمر ساختمان و استقرار منطقه اي و جهاني داشته و متناسب با نياز هاي كودكان و سالمندان باشد و در عين حال در جهت شكوفايي استعداد هاي كودكان و اميد به زندگي در سالمندان و در راستاي پايداري هر چه بيشتر با محيط و سازگاري با اصول پايداري اجتماعي و اقتصادي توجه ويژه اي به مصرف انرژي و تاثيرزيست بومي ساختمانها و شهر‌ها داشته باشد.اساس فكر تأمين آسايشگاه سالمندان در كنار كودكان را مي‌توان در دو عبارت خلاصه كرد: رفاه و آسايش اطرافيان، رفاه و سايش سالمندان و كودكان.
