Memorization has always been a frequently used technique in language learning activities.
A lot of research studies have been conducted to support or undermine its efficiency. However, its
frequency and role can never be rejected. As a way of learning, memorization has roots in
educational philosophies and language acquisition theories. Also, it has been given a place in
various taxonomies of language learning strategies. In addition, one of the interesting aspects
related to memorization is its culture-bound nature. Learners from different cultural backgrounds
maintain differing attitudes towards this technique. The current paper is an attempt to consider
these issues and present an overview to some major aspects of memorization in L2 learning.
Finally, the theoretical and pedagogical implications are discussed.
