ABSTRACT Buildings account for approximately 40% of global final energy use and this clearly indicates the necessity to adopt effective techniques for optimizing building performance concerning energy issues. One of the most critical aspects of designing energy efficient systems for integration in buildings is to pay sufficient attention to the façades during the early stage of design. This is due to their direct impacts of facades on the overall energy budget, user’s comfort and environmental effects. In most cases, the advanced integrated facades are suggested as a solution to this issue since it can adopt adaptive functions that can be adjusted in order to respond to variations of the indoor and outdoor environment and maintain comfort conditions with the lowest energy demand. In this regard, this study develops a holistic overview of available integrated façade systems that takes into consideration the energy demands and environmental concerns at the same time. These systems are categorized into three systems including double skin facades, multifunctional building modules and system combined of different strategies in order to tackle technological and aesthetical issues in the field of architecture. This research aims to oversee the current strategies and implications of the mentioned system and introduces new prospect for adoption of integrated facades by a comparing and combining various effective systems.
