اهميت احياي عناصر طبيعي در شهرها، با توجه به نياز به فضاهاي جمعي و سرزندگي درآن، ضرورتي غيرقابل انكار است. چرا كه شهر به مثابه يك موجود زنده، براي ادامه حيات، به سرزندگي نيازمند است. اما مسئله اينست كه، چگونه مي توان مظاهر طبيعي در شهرها، همچون رودخانه ها را كه اغلب مورد غفلت و انفعال قرار مي‌گيرند، مورد شناسايي، تقويت و استفاده بهينه قرار دارد، بطوريكه اين پتانسيل شهري درخدمت شهر و شهروندان قرارگرفته و موجبات حضور فعال مردم، سرزندگي و زيست پذيري را فراهم آورد؟ شهر رشت يكي از شهرهاييست كه از اين موهبت طبيعي برخوردار است. لكن به عنوان يكي از الزامات شهري، درجهت ارتقاءكيفيت محيط شهر، بدان پرداخته نشده است. براي انجام اين پژوهش، رودخانه زرجوب رشت كه به لحاظ محيطي قوي، ولي درعين حال به دليل نداشتن سيماي مناسب، زيرساخت ها وخدمات شهري متناسب با نيازشهروندان، ازسرزندگي كافي برخوردارنمي‌باشد، مورد مطالعه قرارگرفت سپس با استفاده از آراي نظريه پردازان در اين زمينه، همچون، جين جيكوبز، كوين لينچ، يان گل و ... به ارائه عواملي و معيارهايي در جهت ايجاد محيط سرزنده در اين رودخانه پرداخته شد. پرسش‌هايي كه در اين نوشتار در نظر است به پاسخ آنها بپردازيم عبارتند از :كالبد رودخانه زرجوب رشت، چگونه در ارتقا كيفيت محيط وسرزندگي مردم تأثير دارد؟ چه راهكارهايي در باز آفريني حاشيه اين رودخانه پيشنهاد مي‌شود؟ روش تحقيق در اين پژوهش، تحليل توصيفي ومبتني بر سنجش معيارهاي كيفي، جهت تحقيق دروضع موجود، با تكيه برمطالعات اسنادي، مشاهده و مصاحبه خواهد بود. يافته‏هاي پژوهش درنهايت به صورت دستورالعمل‌هايي در برگيرنده مدل كلي عوامل تأثيرگذار بر سرزندگي و بهبودكيفيت محيط رودخانه مي‌باشد.
