واژه «پايداري» امروزه به طور گسترده اي به منظور توصيف جهاني كه در آن نظام هاي انساني و طبيعي تواماً بتوانند تا آينده اي دور ادامه حيات دهند به كار گرفته مي شود. اما متاسفانه ابعاد مختلف يك توسعه پايدار و همه جانبه (اجتماعي، اقتصادي و محيطي) به طور مساوي توسط سياستگذاران گفتمان پايداري اولويت بندي و تدوين نشده است و هنوز ادبياتي كه متمركز بر پايداري اجتماعي باشد. اهميت ميدان در سيماي شهر و روستا يا يك مجتمع زيستي، محدود به شكل و فرم ظاهري آن نيست. بلكه وقايع تاريخي و مهم تر از آن، نيازهاي اجتماعي موجب مي شود تا در محل مناسبي، فضايي به نام ميدان به وجود آيد و بخشي از زندگي روزمره مردم در آن جريان يابد. رشد و گسترش نا مناسب شهرهاي بزرگ امروزي نظير تهران امتداد و كشيدگي بي حد و حصر تضعيف حس مكان و دلبستگي به آن عناصر كالبدي و معماري بي هويت و بي توجه به تاريخ و فرهنگ مردمي ... همه و همه موجب تغيير در احساس و تصور مردم از يك مكان به ويژه ميادين شهري شده است مياديني كه اگرچه در گذشته تاريخي خود به واسطه فعاليت هاي اجتماعي عملكردي و نيز تاريخي بسيار حايز اهميت بوده اند اما در دوره اخير به دلايل بسياري از رونق افتاده اند و كار كرد اوليه ي خود را نيز از دست داده اند و شايد تنها نامي از انها باقي مانده باشد. روش مقاله حاضر توصيفي-تحليلي است تا تعاملات اجتماعي در ميدان توپخانه تهران بررسي مي شود تا در رشد و گسترش نا مناسب شهرهاي بزرگ امروزي نظير تهران ، حس مكان و دلبستگي به عناصر كالبدي و معماري ،تاريخ و فرهنگ مردمي احساس و تصور مردم از يك مكان به ويژه ميادين شهري پرداخته مي شود.
